CBD for Eczema

CBD for Eczema, does it work?

Eczema is hardly a rare skin condition. The National Eczema Association estimates that 31 million Americans have some form of eczema. There are seven different types of eczema, but overall, any form of the condition causes the skin to become red, dry, and often itchy, with cases ranging from mild to severe. Eczema is not contagious—it’s mostly just uncomfortable and bothersome. If you’ve been struggling with symptoms of eczema and haven’t been able to find relief with traditional products, maybe it’s time to give CBDMEDIC™ Eczema Therapy Medicated Ointment for eczema a try.

Keep reading to learn more about how topical products formulated with CBD which include active ingredients can help relieve symptoms associated with eczema.

What causes eczema?

There are a variety of different types of eczema and each is characterized by certain symptoms and “triggers.” These triggers are irritants or allergens that can come from outside or inside the body and activate the immune system, causing irritation and inflammation. These triggers develop in several ways that include genetic factors, environmental exposure, allergic reactions, insect bites, and even a decrease in blood flow to certain parts of the body.

The seven different types of eczema are:

  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Contact dermatitis
  • Neurodermatitis
  • Dyshidrotic eczema
  • Nummular eczema
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Stasis dermatitis
  •

Atopic dermatitis is the most common type of eczema, but it is possible to have more than one type of eczema occurring in different areas of the body at the same time. Eczema symptoms are different for everyone, and your eczema may not look the same as someone else’s. However, in general, eczema causes itchy, rough, or scaly patches of dry skin, inflammation, discoloration, and sometimes swelling or blistering. It’s important to have a professional diagnose the type or types of eczema you’re experiencing, so you can figure out the cause and best course of treatment.

What are the problems with traditional eczema treatment?

Topical treatments are often the best way to keep eczema under control. However, the challenge with treating eczema is that it makes the skin barrier unable to maintain the moisture needed to protect itself from the factors that trigger the immune response.

Some topical eczema treatments are thicker, oil-based, and contain both humectant ingredients and ingredients that moisturize and protect the skin. Lotions can be therapeutic but may not be the most effective in treating eczema, as they are often water-based and evaporate quickly, which can deplete even more moisture from inflamed skin.

Lotions may also contain preservatives that could burn when applied to eczema and trigger more of a reaction. If you use a lotion to help treat your eczema, make sure it is oil-based and doesn’t include any potential allergens. Product ingredients to avoid when treating eczema include exfoliating acids such as lactic, glycolic, and salicylic acids, as well as fragrances and retinol. These substances can be very drying and cause more irritation.

Additionally, mineral oil and petroleum jelly high in oil content may be suitable for treating eczema, but they don’t absorb easily. Because of this, these products stay on the surface of the skin and can make everyday life tasks more difficult because they can ruin items they touch, such as clothing.

Can the skin-soothing qualities of medicated topicals help eczema sufferers?

People who suffer from eczema and haven’t been able to find relief with traditional methods have started turning to topical products that are formulated with active ingredients, such as colloidal oatmeal, and natural emollients and essential oils, such as hemp extract, to help relieve irritation while locking in the body’s natural moisture.
